Unit 4 Projects
Handles
Planning
I had just gone to petroglyph like a week before I started this and me and my friend made sea creature themed bowls, so I felt inspired when I saw this on Pinterest.
Process
I started out by Rowling a pretty big slab. I then went and got a talenti container and wrapped my slab around it, cutting some of the clay off to have it fir properly. One I did that I rolled out another slab from my scarps and cut out a single line for the actual hand part and then once I had scored and slipped that on I cut out two different little tail shaped pieces and scored and slipped those on. Once I had finished all of that I spent a whole different class really smoothing it out, and using a small loop tool to create detail on the tail.
Glazing
I used two mid fire glazes; indigo float, and textured turquoise. I did four layers; two indigo float, and then two layers of textured turquoise on top of indigo float. I did this because I wanted a dark blue, but also wanted to bring attention to more details, and just make it pop out in general.
Finished product w/ reflection
This is actually the first piece I am genuinely proud of, and enjoy looking at. I think I nailed it with the colors, and my only real mistake I think I made is not finding a way to glaze the crevice between the tail and the mug, soI can't drink out of it. In general though, I love it.
Lidden Box
Planning
Im gonna be honest, this whole project went south for me really fast, but I saw this photo and I just really liked the polka dots, and thought they were fun.
Process
I rolled out a slab, and used a measuring tape to cut out pieces that could ft the foundation. I then score and slipped all my pieces together once they were all done. The lid I had to redo at least 5 times despite me measuring it but once I did do it I basically did the same thing as I did with the actual box, just smaller side pieces.
Glazing
I only fired this piece once, and so I only did under glaze. I used Lilac on the inside and on the outside of the lid to make polka dots along with blush on the lid. On the outside of the box part I used turquoise and leaf green under glaze to make polka dots.
Finished/reflection
For me this whole piece was a mess... I had to do a lot of tries just when I was molding it, and then when I fired it the lid had shrunk, and could no longer fit the box at all. I decided not to fire it again because I knew I wouldn't use it and it would be pointless.
Poetry Response piece
Planning
Since my poem was one spring I really wanted to do a vase w/ flowers. I saw some things with the flowers going out of the vase and thought it was cool.
Process
I took a large block of clay and split it into two. I then made two pinch pots and scored them together. I cut off the top of the large pinch pot and manipulated the clay until it reaches a vase-like state. Then I rolled out a slab and used cookie cutter to make my flowers and scored and slipped them onto my vase.
Glazing
I used oatmeal glaze as my base color and then chum plum on the rim of my vase w/ the goal of having it slide down on my vase. I then used various colors on the flowers.
Finished/Reflection
This really didn't turn out the way I wanted it, and my main take away from this was that I denfinetly needed more than 2 layers of paint.
Series of 4 (Did not get to)
Planning/what I would've done
I would love to take Inspiration from this Artist named Taylor Suchy. She lives in Orange County, California, and you can find her website if you look up Carved Color ceramics online... The reason I would've chose her is because my mom loves these specific four vases and I think I could've been nice if I had made them for her, and not only that but I also love some of Taylor's creations (especially her raised mug). I also think that these vases would have been perfect for the series of four.
Next Level Slab (Didn't get to)
This is actually SO COOL. This piece is by Colleen Deiss (you should check her out) She's an awesome artist, and I think that for this specific project it would have been cool to give this a try. If I were to have made it though, I think I would have had to make multiple slabs, and that could have been challenging.
3D master work of art (Didn't get to)
Painting I would've picked and fun facts
This painting is called The Cliff Walk at Pourville and it is by Claude Monet. Cluad Monet was a French painter, and the founder of impressionism paintings, he also is one of the painters that we will never forget, as he played a big rule in modernism painting. Claude Monet's painting are so absolutely gorgeous, and one of my favorite things about them is how they are not exact, and do not look as though they are a photo, but that only adds to his art. In my opinions all of Monet's pieces look as though they are dreams. I would have picked The Cliff Walk at Pourville specifically because in a way it reminds me of west cliff, and I think it would have been really cool as a bowl, with the women and boy standing up inside of it.
